The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly witnessed high political drama on Monday as opposition AIADMK legislators staged a walkout, alleging that they were not being allowed to speak during Zero Hour or raise issues concerning the public. The tense atmosphere further intensified as several opposition parties demanded an immediate discussion on the recent ammonia gas leak tragedy. AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami accused the Speaker of denying his party members the opportunity to voice public concerns. Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Palaniswami said the party had repeatedly sought permission to raise important matters affecting people but was not given a chance. As a mark of protest, AIADMK members walked out of the House. The Assembly session also saw uproar over the ammonia gas leak incident, which has claimed five lives and left 67 people undergoing treatment in hospitals. Opposition parties, including the DMK and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), urged the Speaker to hold a detailed discussion and ensure accountability over the incident. The issue led to heated exchanges between the ruling side and opposition members, briefly disrupting the proceedings. Amid the commotion, Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar assured legislators that adequate time would be provided to discuss the matter in the House. The developments come at a time when the AIADMK is trying to regain political momentum following another electoral setback in Tamil Nadu. Monday’s session highlighted growing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition over both legislative procedures and public safety concerns.
