US President Donald Trump has once again launched a fresh attack on Italy and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, criticizing the country's stance on key international security issues. In a post shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed that the United States has spent enormous amounts of money over the years on NATO and Italy's security, but Italy has failed to support Washington on major concerns such as the Iranian nuclear threat.
Trump wrote that despite decades of American protection and trillions of dollars spent on NATO and allied defense, Italy and its leadership have shown little willingness to take part in addressing what he described as the serious threat posed by Iran. According to Trump, America's allies should stand together on issues affecting global security.
This is not the first time Trump has publicly criticized Giorgia Meloni. Following the recent G-7 summit, he had claimed that the Italian Prime Minister repeatedly sought photographs with him. Those remarks were quickly rejected by both the Italian government and Meloni herself.
Responding to the allegations, Meloni released a video message calling Trump's claims completely false. She said that neither she nor Italy had ever begged anyone for anything. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also strongly condemned Trump's remarks, describing them as offensive and serious. In protest, he reportedly canceled a planned visit to the United States.
Trump's latest comments targeting Italy's approach toward Iran could further strain relations between the two allies. So far, neither the Italian government nor Prime Minister Meloni has issued an official response to his latest remarks.
