Talks between India and the United States over a proposed bilateral trade agreement have reached a crucial stage, and an important breakthrough could come within the next 48 hours. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is set to hold a key meeting in New Delhi with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, a discussion that is expected to play a major role in finalizing the first phase of the deal.
The negotiations have gained momentum as the July 24 deadline linked to the US tariff regime approaches. Over the past few weeks, senior officials from both countries have held several rounds of talks in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump also discussed the matter during the recent G7 summit in France.
According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, negotiations are now in their final stages, with positive progress made on several important issues. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal has indicated that the framework of the agreement could be finalized soon.
However, tariff-related concerns continue to remain the biggest obstacle. India wants its exporters to receive better market access and more favorable tariff benefits than competing countries such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. Piyush Goyal has repeatedly stressed that India will support the deal only if it offers clear and direct advantages to Indian businesses.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador Sergio Gor has claimed that nearly 99 percent of the agreement has already been completed, though some tariff issues are still unresolved. With both sides pushing for a breakthrough, the coming two days are expected to be decisive for the future of India-US trade relations.
